I was induced twice, the IV induction is by far worse than the gel squirted around the cervix. If you have the choice to try the gel first, definitely do it!
good luck ladies, stay healthy.
My first birth was au natural, contractions like a mack truck. No induction. My second birth was induced, but again no pain meds- and I never felt a single contraction till the very very end, even though they were spiking off the charts. Easiest labor ever! Third I had an epidural right from the get-go (also induced) so I couldn't say, but that was the shortest one!
my first two were natural, first one was induced with petosin (sp) iv drip, 19 hours of labor, he was face up, I pushed for over 2.5 hours and they had to use the suction cup to get him out. second was a natural labor, little over 7 hours, pushed for about half hour I think. third time around I had the induction gel, my lamaze coach was an hour out, labor was going too fast, we didn't know if she was even going to make it and my mom was out of town. I had an epidural but I still felt shooting pains in my asshole (that was really awful!) with every contraction. that labor was 3 hours. I got to pick which day he was born, I picked the following day, the doc had me stop pushing for a contraction, and he was born at 12:03am. He barely made it there in time to catch, if I hadn't chosen the following day he wouldn't have had time to gown up even. found out the reason I hadn't gone into natural labor was because he had his hand stuck up above his head, so the head didn't press against the cervix and make it eface, or whatever they call it. He came out hand first, doc said he was "reaching for the car keys already"
