Why kill things when a grocery store will do it for you?

When we had our 70 acres we bought very little from the store. Our garden was 2 full acres.

That is what I want. Not so much 70 acres (though I'd like 10 at least) but a huuuuuge garden, and a small orchard. Enough to supply my family with all the vegetables and fruits we'd need for a year. Depending on where we lived I'd still have to buy some things, like avocados and citrus fruits (unless I could work in a greenhouse somehow) but the majority would be from our own place.

I'd also like some animals (chickens definitely, not sure yet what else).

Does accidentally swallowing a bug count?

I have killed crabs and lobsters as well, but I assume that you'd lump those in with "fish".

We didn't have an orchard but we did have 2 apple trees and 2 pecan trees we harvested from. We would also go to the orchards and buy fruits we picked as well and blackberries we picked. My mom did a ton of freezing and canning. We never did grow corn, but we bought it by the bushel and she would blanch that too. Lots of preserves and pickles. Literally dozens of canned tomatoes and green beans. Flour, sugar....stuff like that we bought. We had our own milk cow too and made out own butter.

Hey does this count if I killed something and someone else ate it? I shot a pigeon once and gave it to an arab guy who said he'd eat it, and he did.

Yep that's pretty much exactly what I envision, only hopefully having the fruit trees and berries on our own place to minimize the picking and buying at another farm (though that is always more economical than the store). Yeah I don't think I would bother with corn or wheat or anything like that- just buy those few things. And I would love to have a cow for milk and butter (maybe a couple of goats too!), but although I know how to take care of chickens, ducks and geese I know virtually nothing about caring for cows, so I would have a lot to learn for sure.
