I thought you had to have a permit to give out food to people?

I agree that it's bureaucratic and probably unnecessary, but who's to say you are practicing good food safety techniques, if you're not being inspected from time to time?

Currently I believe the law only requires permits if you are selling food.

I think the fact that no one ever gets sick from the food is pretty good support for the fact that we're practicing good food safety. Plus, almost all of the food we serve is vegan. There is much less risk of food borne illness when you aren't dealing with meat/dairy. Probably at least half of the people that volunteer with us have some form of professional kitchen experience, and have been trained in proper food safety protocol. The fact that we're all really passionate about what we're doing, and are there because we actually care ensures that we all make a strong effort to do things in a sanitary way.

"Nobody has ever gotten sick" is a terrible argument.

There are probably tens of thousands of restaurants in the country where nobody has ever gotten food poisoning after people eat there... but that doesn't mean that they can ignore the rules.

Why is getting a permit and following the proper proceedings that impossible?

I find it hard to believe that there isn't a single member of your group that isn't the member of a church, or has a job, where they would allow you to use a parking lot or something.

Sure, lots of restaurants haven't made anyone sick, but they're selling food. We're sharing food with people because we care about them. If you have a picnic in a local park and invite your friends and family, should your cooking facilities have to be inspected? Should you have to apply for a permit for the location(which you might be denied) and take food safety classes?

please don't get me wrong, I love that y'all are doing this, and I don't think you deserve to get hassled for it.

So you think that anybody should just be able to set up a table and start passing out free food without any regulations at all?

Your organization is obviously perfect and benevolent. But what stops somebody from setting up a table, without a permit, and 1500 homeless
people get sick of food poisoning.

There is no way to trace it, no way to hold anybody accountable.

Permits are almost always about accountability and liability and never about "OMG DON'T SERVE THE HOMELESS!!!"
