This doesn't take location into account either...
There are people in Indiana who live very well on 40-50k a year.
That's practically McDonalds wages in NYC.

Average household income includes the 1% in it's figures, thus people like Romney skew the figures much higher than what most people actually make....as he makes 10,000 times what the majority of people take in.
Median household income is around 31K a year. That is, half of all household make more, half make less.
That's two people each making 15K a year or so, not 30K a year.
Pretty grim when you look at it. Also much more accurate than an average that gives the same weight to a tiny fraction of households that make thousands of times what the other 99% make.

That number is too high the median household income in 2011 was $49909 in the US
The disparity between AVERAGE and MEDIAN means that there are too many rich people that pull up the average.
