What type of work? Here Fast Food is $7.35/hr. If you are doing something that requires a bit more experience or skill then $8.00.
Housekeepers make $8 - $9/hr. I saw a posting for a delivery driver = $10/hr.
Something that uses computers probably $10 - $11/hr.
The wages down here are pretty low. Walmart is one of the highest paying employers for non-professional postings (here).

I'm getting paid $9 now, but I didn't know if that was too low on average. I could try asking for $10, but I guess $11 or $12 are unrealistic numbers to ask for? The other problem is that I'm not getting as many hours I want either. I'd like between 18-23 hours per week steadily but right now my hours are far from steady.
See, I know what I want but I don't know if it's okay to ask for these things or if they'll just laugh me right out of the building.

I've always put down "Negotiable", then the employer will let you know if there is any room to move from their set amount.

Have you improved your skill set or acquired any certificates or degrees since you started/last given a raise? Asking for a $2 raise without gaining any kind of value yourself will probably go over like a lead balloon. When is your next review? Does your position get scheduled raises?

being part time is going to hurt you.
most managers will reward their full time employee's first over part timers.

I don't want to ask a raise from my current company, I want to just start leaving resumes around other places to see if I can find a better offer elsewhere. This may sound dumb to most people here, but I believe I'm better than $9/hr. I'm very serious, dependable, an eager learner, adaptable, I'm never late and I never miss a shift. I'm awesome god damn it, awesome enough for $11/hr.
*shrug* does that sound whiny and entitled?

thing with low paying hourly jobs is most times hiring mangers arent looking for quality. they say they are but its a load of crap.
they try to fill the position with a warm body at the lowest possible price.

If you are just leaving resumes around, you don't need to say how much you want, that isn't something you put on a resume.
