I don't know enough about the Olympics, but why was it the U-23 team that was trying to qualify?

The Olympics did not want to compete with the World Cup, and to maintain the "amateur players" as opposed to "professional", and keep countries on equal footing they require all male players to be under the age of 23 at the beginning of the tournament. To add interest, they allow 3 over 23 players per team.

Basically the olympics dont consider Soccer a sport either and are trying to draw interest away from it so they can dump it in favor of real sports.

And yet there is no American Football in the Olympics at all, so they obviously don't consider obese people "athletes".
