Not true. You'll see a lot of $4.95 instead of $4.99, for instance.

Or they'll just go ahead and make it $5.00.

how are you going to know really?
the price of stuff changes weekly.
like where I work at all items got at min a $1.80 increase in prices, due to the cost of food coming from our distributors.

Personally? I wouldn't likely notice because I'm never that low on cash to care. But I know a whole lot of folks that would notice and complain... loudly.

then these people need to open their eyes and come out from under their rock, inflation has been ticking up for the past few years now.

1 million pennies is only 10K.

100 million pennies is "only" a million.

They don't add up to enough for anyone to give a damn about.

Sure, I'd take an extra million if someone offered...but if they offered it in pennies I'd be making coinstar rich as hell...and not giving a damn.

If you pay cash, it'll get rounded up/down.

If you pay by debit card (the way we do in DK), it doesn't.

*shrug* Eliminating the penny has been discussed since the 70s.

A VERY good point as well. This will ONLY affect cash payments. If you pay by credit card, debit card, check, money order, mobile payment, etc. then you'll be paying the same price.

rofl at the doomsayers and alarmists...just LOLz.

The government estimates it loses $11 million a year producing and distributing the penny, and that doesn't include the costs and frustrations for businesses and consumers that use them in transactions.

This is why it's being done.

The +/- pennies will all work out in the end. And if your business can't handle an increase of 2cents per inventory purchase, then you deserve to go out of business.

It's been said before...but maybe I'll reiterate. TOTAL = we can't round to the penny so we round to the 5cent. Unless you do only 3-4cent transactions everyday a million times, this is not even an issue.

get rid of pennies frees up the materials used to produce them.

which means they can use those materials for nickels and dimes instead and save money on those materials.

the value of coinage is now worthless from a metals perspective and everything devolves to fiat currency and digital debt record.
