I think taking away somebody's ability to have a gun because somebody files a restraining order on them is pretty BS to be honest but it doesn't save Zimmerman at all. I doubt they can electrocute the kid for it but he can do some time.

The restraining order was granted in 2005. I can't verify if or when it was ever expired, but that's a long time... That's part of the fun of playing armchair quarterback on this one when we don't have access to all of the documentation.
The article quoted (messily) references him attacking a cop, but those charges were dropped long ago, and the entire episode is now irrelevant both to his CCW permit and this shooting incident under Florida law.
As for the "messily": why does the entire web, even supposedly "professional" websites, read like it was written by FD?

This should take some of the weight off people's argument against the self defense law right? I mean, if he was actually following the law, then he wouldn't have had a gun to use.

I dunno how hard it is to get a restraining order against someone (as far as building a case and having evidence, etc), but if someone feels they are threatened to the point where they need to get a restraining order, taking away that threat's gun seems reasonable.
