I don't think any rodents have the chance to take over with humans around.

Around the Pre-cambrian? apparently a shrewlike mammal was a predecessor to all of the larger mammals once dinosaurs were out of the picture and they were able to differentiate and fill all the newly empty niches.

I think at this point with the bird variety being what it is, if there was a rodent explosion somewhere you would just see a boom in the predatory bird population to balance it back out.

If anything is going to knock us out of top dog status, it will probably be bacteria or fungus.
