Han did use it as a distance measurement. He made the Kessel Run in less distance than anyone ever because he skirted a black hole at the edge of it to do so.

Han did use it as a distance measurement. He made the Kessel Run in less distance than anyone ever because he skirted a black hole at the edge of it to do so.

The kessel run is a set distance, to avoid a black hole, he went closer to the black hole to do it in less distance.
