I do to.
My father had bladder cancer. 
It's terrible and he had the same symptoms you are having. He had it removed from his bladder and also had chemo treatments. The treatments had to be given thru his penis. Very painful treatments. He would take pain meds. before his appointment. He had 6 of these treatments. He then swore he would never go thru that again if it came back and it did.
For your sake, I hope it isn't the cancer.

from what I've been told, blood in the urine is not an indicator of infection.

I hope its kidney stones. I've had them, they were too big to pass so I had non-invasive surgery. They put you to sleep and throw sound waves at the stones to break them up. Then you pass the fragments through the urine. It bruises your kidney up and it'll hurt for a few days but it's not so bad.

The symptoms of a bladder infection include:
Cloudy or bloody urine, which may have a foul or strong odor
Low fever (not everyone will have a fever)
Pain or burning with urination
Pressure or cramping in the lower abdomen (usually middle) or back
Strong need to urinate often, even right after the bladder has been emptied

I would imagine that blood + pus = UTI
blood alone = stone
The last time I passed a stone I thought it was a UTI, doctor did the urine test and said there was blood in my urine which indicated to them it wasn't infection but a stone. Maybe they just worded it awkwardly?
