I've been brainstorming a little on a way to scam this dude. I think that the only way there is a chance to trick him is to get a character under him as a vassal as step one in setting up a sting. If I can create a new character and get him to make me his lacky, I can work him into a scam scenario where he joins me in trying to scam another party (someone we know and he doesn't). The idea is to get some look alike GS that is supposed to be PPGS(whatever) armor since it is worth more. If the lacky gets it in the scam, he can then offer his (wonderful) patron the better armor in exchange for the post patch that he stole, since he deserves the better armor as his patron. We could cast a 'hide value' or whatever the spell is, to keep him from IDing it in the trade window, but have it inscribed with something that will make him bite, like, "To my Favorite Vassal 'so and so', You earned it!", then put the stats for GS(whatever).
I really think he might bite at the chance to improve his armor especially if his vassal participated in a scam to get the better stuff from someone. This sounds like a level of sophistication beyond his pea-brain's ability to comprehend. The hardest part will be getting him to accept a vassal and trust him. I think that playing someone who worships his theiving skill might be the ticket.
