Seeing the overlay and everyone on it is an awesome thing. Gives real perspective on things.

Oh and the server runs at defaults so it is pretty easy to use...

Download the MM client

Download a current overlay... mc.omnikrys.com/one

Run the client

Point it at the overlay you downloaded

Log into the game and onto the server

Connect to our server (mc.omnikrys.com, default port: 50192)

Calibrate map... current offset is about -1616, -1808
When that is done you should see everyone on the map, and in the right places, in real-time. You will only need to update the overlay and recalibrate when things start to look off and as long as the map doesn't expand too greatly calibration shouldn't be all that hard to eyeball.

Thanks Phaelon for the info In game. I didn't realize it loaded the entire chunk for possible spawn locations >.<

Though, it seems that there is a -new- new spawn algorithm that allows mobs to spawn with 128 blocks around you; but they'll despawn if they're more than 30 meters from you (Circle not square) or something...

Looking into it and going to redesign the mob trap

I had to zoom and pan a bit to find the map when I originally did it

And...

Since there seems to be some confusion (direct link to the map overlay tool)...
http://www.minecraftam.com/Files/MinecraftMap_0.3.2.zip

Download it then extract it into its own folder.
After you download it you will want to make a bat file containing the following line...
(just paste that line into notepad and save as run.bat in the folder you extracted everything to)
java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar "MinecraftMap.jar"

Now you can just double click the bat to open the map tool, load a new map, connect and calibrate and you should be good to go.

Finally...

If it still isn't loading it could be a memory/size issue.
Open the overlay in Gimp/Photoshop/whatever and reduce its size to 50%.
Go into the cfg file in the folder you extracted everything into. It is called something like mmConfig.txt or something.
Change the ratio line (towards the bottom, it should be 1.0 by default) to 2.0 and save it.
Run the bat again and see if you can load the overlay now.

If all that fails reduce the overlay by another 50%, or reduce a new overlay to 25% and change the ratio to 4.0.

Not at my home PC right now so skimped on some of the details but they should be obvious or someone else should be able to clarify.

When I click the run.bat all that happens is a command prompt opens up for about 1 second and then it closes

Is the file still called MinecraftMap.jar? He might've changed it. If he did all you have to do is change the name in the bat file.

Also, how much memory is there on your computer? If it is 2Gb or less change the two 1024s to something like 512 and try again.

What exactly does it do when you double click the jar directly? If it opens but the overlay doesn't load at all when you try to load it it could be memory. Try reducing it to 25% of its size then try to load the new one.

Oh and put pause in the bat file after that java line and try to run it. It should try to run then when it fails the command line (black screen) should stay up... are there any errors or other messages?

Steele, could you look into adding the following mods:
http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=84500

This would give us some amazing abilities to do some really cool shit on the server...

I survived to the end and got nothing out of it, but hey.
