I'm starting to get lots of LUA errors while I'm playing. From the error descriptions, they're sometimes caused by the game itself, or various addons. Over the past 5 years or so, I've run various patches, moved systems, moved directories, added and updated and delete a gazillion addons.

I'm thinking it might be time to reinstall WoW just like I refresh my desktop system every year or so.

Are other people doing this? What's the best way...a download of the game into a new directory with a refresh of the more updated and popular addons?

Or maybe my current installation is recoverable/fixable somehow...

What are your thoughts?

Reinstall of off the Cat DVD. I noticed after doing this I don't get these trickle downloads every 3-4 days like I used to.

I don't think you need to reinstall the game, there are the three "directories" they tell people to delete each time they are dealing with problems on a system. I think those are Interface (think : Addons), WTF, and Cache.

LUA errors usually are because of Addons or something they kept in the WTF folder

This happens because your wow\data\cache folder has been wiped or corrupted somehow. I had that exact issue a couple months ago and traced it to that folder. Copied it over from my alt that never had the trickle download problem and it hasn't done it since.

As for crud building up, most of the "crud" builds up in your WTF settings LUA files. I notice that even with my addons still installed, if I clear that out once a year or so, my FPS goes back up like 30% or more. WoW's LUA variable storage is apparently rather...unoptimized. Of course, doing this loses your frames placements, your bartender/macaroon/bindpad bindinds/macros and such, which requires time to set back up, but it seems to be worth it if performance and errors are impacting you.

My experience, at any rate. Hope it helps.
