For Cataclysm, we wanted to create more immersion with better storytelling, and we wanted your characters to feel connected to ebb and flow of Azeroth. This was something we hoped to accomplish through a number of mediums including quests.

Overall, we think we were successful in achieving those goals and making the leveling experience more story-driven, but we realize we may not have hit the nail perfectly on the head. For example, we've received a lot of feedback that suggests we made questing a bit too linear this expansion, and we're not in total disagreement. It's cool that your character has a visual impact on the world and can watch as key events unfold, sure, but sometimes it can feel a bit awkward when you're unable to explore content at your own pace because you're still locked to a particular phase. We also hear your concerns about cut-scenes, tradeskill nodes, and the effects phasing has on groups.

We're taking all these criticisms in stride and will be using them to improve the questing experience for future expansions and, to an extent, future patches. When it comes to questing, it's matter of finding a good balance between story and gameplay, and that tightrope can be a hard one to walk. Your feedback keeps us from swaying too far in any one direction, though, so we greatly appreciate threads like this one. Keep it up.

Overall I like questing in cata zones, but yeah, I do hate some of the phasing stuff. I recently finished twilight highlands with my pally. Prior to that, the valley right before grim batol has no enemies and you have relatively easy access to getting ore in those areas.

I do like some of the "story" quests though, such as the end of Vashj'ir when all your efforts still don't stop the bad guys. Burning Steppes has a nice story chain too, definitely flows better than before. Same thing with Eastern Plaguelands when you're picking up new NPC's at every stop while riding the wagon, and culminating with having to rescue one of the NPC's before the baddies make him into a Death Knight.

Oh, hey look, another blue post acknowledging complaints that got pooh-pooh'd here and elsewhere.

Its funny when blizzard has to acknowledge how retarded they and their fanboys are, as they beg to keep everyone's subscriptions

It was fun the first time but had no replay value which was a very bad marketing decision.

I love this line. A bit passive agressive.

So what they are saying you dont like but we really do.

No surprise. As usual, some of us saw this problem long before Blizzard did. Just another notch in the club of the "armchair developers" who continue to show far more foresight in these things than Blizzard OR its fanboys.

The question might be, will Rift see the same problem in time before releasing?

Yeah Rift questing is just as linear..I seriously doubt they will change the game less than a month from release. I still think its gonna be fun to play through once.. replayability might be low though.

Yeah, I just remember with the original quests, I could go to different zones with alts and try a different path. I'm not sure how the revamped 1-60 is, but many times you have a single quest in your log that you must complete to unlock a new area of quests. Hyjal and Vash'jir are like this. I never even finished the last quest in Vash'jir because it's bugged and I just moved on. More phasing means more buggy quests.

I think TBC had a great balance. Limited phasing and vehicles/mounts and huge zones. WotLK was overkill with the vehicles and phasing and now we have even more phasing and gimmick stuff.

If they are talking about the correct balance, look back at TBC zones.

WoW is a big "alt" friendly game (heirlooms?) and the linear questing really makes it hard. I feel like as you level higher and higher, you get more and more funneled into a narrow path.
