I have been looking at various Guild ranking sites and all of them seem to come up with different numbers.

Which do I trust ? If any.

Depends? Do you want a PvP or a PvE guild? Or a broad based guild? That might be why you're getting different numbers. Different emphasis on different things.

Guild rankings based on raid progresion

If they all rely on the same data why can they be so different ?

Because they give different weights to the boss kills themselves or have different decay rates (aka the same boss killed two weeks later is worth less). In terms of the number of bosses killed, that should match.

Also, most of them require someone to tell the site to update for that guild. They don't crawl the armory on their own as frequently, so the information may be outdated if no one cares to update.

Speaking for http://www.wowtrack.org/

This site crawls each guild at least once a week (and more often for high ranking guilds.) Updates can also be requested manually for individual realms or guilds at any time.

Wowtrack uses a combination of a point based ranking with a decay and a "finish line" ranking. While any type of point based ranking is somewhat subjective, I believe that the "finish line" ranking which applies once a guild has finished all content is less so.

The main reason I started Wowtrack (or rather, expanded to site to include guild rankings) was to provide separate rankings for both 10-man and 25-man guilds. Because mixing them up in a combined ranking makes no sense for either raid size. A similar point was made by Paragon's arx in a recent blog post: http://www.paragon.fi/blogs/why-10-25-should-be-10-25

I generally check http://www.wowprogress.com/, which is probably the most frequented one.

Lets you filter by 10/25 man guilds and the region you're interested in. Also has pretty informative guild/character pages.
