I think WoW arena play could be a viable eSport with rigid pre-made template characters. With one major caveat: they need to figure out how to balance properly first. As long as specific combinations reign supreme, outweighing tactics and improvisation, it will continue to be laughed at.

It was such a big event they hosted it at their HQ? What did they do, set everybody up at a table in the cafeteria and let them battle it out?
Back in the day we use to do this kind of stuff at someone's house. I bet it was more exciting and competative then this was!

There are some big-money gaming competitions going on now, though not MMO related. There's a 1 million dollar DotA2 tournament going on at GamesCom and there's going to be a 5-mill tournament for League of Legends sometime soon. Kinda ridiculous if you ask me, but it seems gaming tournaments are getting pretty up there in prize money.

I love watching arena videos. These were hard to watch though because the announcers weren't using the players names as they appeared on the nameplates so it was too hard to learn who everyone was and keep track of who they were talking about from which team etc.
