i got photoshop and i cant find a step by step guide anywhere. it just says to add a photo and add color. would be great to know how.

Those are some sites to get you started. I mostly googled an effect or beginners tutorials for photoshop when I got started with it and messed around. Hope that helps.

i got photoshop somewhat working. i can add text now. now i need ot find out how to play with the text liek make it ballon lookin or something. add some glow etc.

Looks pretty good. We have a resource of icon tutorials right here on the icon boards. You should check them out, they taught me a lot when I first started making icons.

The most important thing is to not be discouraged or intimidated by either the sheer complexity of the software or the quality of others' work. I'd venture to say that I'm competent with Photoshop, but I'm still learning new tricks almost every time I use it and humbled daily by what the real experts can do.
