Update from my other postings:
I measured the wall, instead of going off memory. It wasn't quite big enough though. I have also changed what I was going to do. I looked around for more sprites and found some that I liked better, plus the background was rather bland. this one works better IMO.
Branlaadee Linked me to a nice blog with a forum for this sort of stuff. I'm going to check it out. It's

I'm going to build this out of wood. 1 Plywood plank (set side by side) for the entire background (Ghost House) then another plywood plank on top of it for the foreground (platforms) and finally I will use 1/2" Cubes built into the sprites (characters & attacks)
So instead of being just a solid piece, it's going to have a bit of contour to it from the various levels of wood.
I think it'll create an awesome effect.

Will you be hand painting the blocks? I feel like I'm missing something here.
Yup. The blocks will be hand painted then glued together. The Plywood planks will simply be painted and set side by side to create the background, and again for the foreground
Edit... Screw Tails. I like Luigi better
Going to make a proof of concept 3x3' image. Will look like this:
