I've always wanted to be able to make somewhat clean icons without always having to come to this board, but I'm not sure how best to go about it without spending money on photoshop type programs.

My first project is sort of simple (I think)... make this into an icon:

Any advice? Or, if you have fun just doing the icon itself, I won't complain either

Thanks

How about this?

80x80

120x120

GIMP is free and does a LOT of what Photoshop can do.

I have been using GIMP for over a year to make my monthly Desktop Calenders, though I dont take advantage of hardly any of the power of the GIMP in what I do. I am learning all the time, and try to incorporate some of the things I learn into each wallpaper.

Photoshop is everything you'd want from your image editor next year, today. Paintshop Pro is (was) some of the things you wanted last year, today. Gimp is everything you'd want today - smeared in s*t.
