Right now i use gimp which is pretty good but i'm open to trying new things that might give me more options. Almost all of what i do is icon making so graphic editors that are good at retaining quality when resizing and allow you to work easily on a pixel to pixel basis would be key points. Gimp works pretty well but i often wish it did a better job of holding onto some of the quality on re-sizes (which might just be impossible for all i know) and i also wish i could increase the size of the picture past 800% when i'm editing things by pixel.
Anyone have any suggestions for other free software that might be worth trying?

Haven't really used it much, but Paint.NET is probably the only other decent free one out there.

Oh I thought you've been using Photoshop all along. So what program do you use to make those icons lately?

i broke down and started using photoshop again. i was using a combination of gimp and photoshop for a bit but as i learn to use photoshop again i'm doing just about everything in that now. i posted this a few months ago when i was frustrated with part of gimps functionality

 That's the way!
GIMP is good for a free program but friend told me the Photoshop pen tool works much better after he switched.

you know what one of the biggest bonuses to photoshop is for me? gimp zooms in to 800%, photoshop zooms to 1600%. its just a minor thing taking the whole program into consideration but that helps me alot with the icon editing since most of it is pixel by pixel.
