C++. There's value in doing it the hard way.

I'd go with a compiled language, namely C# or Java. PHP is far too forgiving and will result in spaghetti learning if you don't have superhuman self-discipline. But I suppose Python or Ruby will do in a pinch.

I'm doing this for college. But at the moment I've taken Java so far. Doing C++ in a couple months. I would recommend C++ as a starting language. Its easier and will ease you into Java which is a little more complex with a different syntax and what not. Use a IDE like Netbeans or Eclipse. I prefer Eclipse myself, read read read and practice! And read some more and practice some more.
