Hmm, I wonder if the game is still good enough to consider playing in the case of Aion failing. I'd like to do a Return to Camelot even if it's only 10 days just to see how it is. Seems interesting, and I've been curious about how things are for quite some time.

It seems that they've cleaned up that mess of a download page too. Last time I tried to get a working client downloaded I had to grab like 4 different, fairly large downloads. There's just one download now that installs the patch client and it downloads ~4 gigs of data. Much better.

in 8 years I've never paid too much attention to whats being said in patch notes / herald etc, so correct me if I'm wrong, but...
if you come back now and use that 10 day period AND you only had toon's on Gawaine.. then you're going to be on the Killbury Cluster, which is not where everyone is these days i.e. the Devon Cluster
seems to me that if you are in that circumstance it would be best to wait to use the free 10 days until you can transfer (copy?) your Gawaine toon to the Ywain Server (on test at the moment) and play on a hopefully high pop. server at that time.

tempting....
but i'll wait for the super cluster and mordred / gaheris mix before I decide anything. I'm having a lot of fun on WoW atm with all the new things lately and DAOC lost it's flavor for me it seems. 
It's a waiting game now to see if the super cluster even happens.. let's not forget... Old Frontiers made it's way to Pendragon testing to a long with those 'hot spot' arena's they had as well... and that idea got scrapped. With this company, unless it's done, it has a chance of not happening.

The new superserver named Ywain is *maybe* coming next week (I'm going to guess it gets delayed an additional week because hey it's Mythic). RvR on Killibury is fairly active even now. The total population seems low by past standards but most of the pve people have long since left for WOW leaving a higher percentage of RvRers. As always it helps to know people who will invite you to groups and/or be part of an active RvR guild.
