I found this on Yahoo and thought it was interesting.

They writer in this story has a good point. In this specific case it did not matter, no one was close enough to make a play. However, lets pretend for a second the defender was, if a quarterback was to play it exactally the same way Manning did, the defender could not prevent him from gaining ground and a first down would still be earned even with the defender being in position to stop it. This rule should certainly be changed, the moment he gain protection from being tackled, he should be ruled down.
