Announced today that the Cowboys plan to make Jason Garrett their permanent head coach. They just have to interview one minority candidate before they make it official, due to the NFL's Rooney rule.
...
Now, how would you like to be the 'minority candidate' who gets the call? This rule and any like it in any facet of life are such utter bullcrap. I can't believe, in 2011, we're still operating with quota systems.
I would like to see anyone who gets a call for this interview to decline it. That would be a statement.

So the Vikings fire Brad Childress and move Leslie Frazier into the top spot. If they decide he's their next coach, they should have to interview at least one white coach before making it official. </a>

If I remember correctly, Tomlin the Steelers coach was just a Rooney Rule filler that impressed so much at his interview he ended up getting the job. The rule does have it's uses in this way, but I can agree that in 2011 it does seem kind of unneeded. There is not a single owner who is going to pass over a highly qualified candidate because he is black. All owners will do what is needed to find the guy they feel will do the best job for their team. Who knows maybe the Cowboys will call someone in for an interview for the Rooney Rule and will end up liking him more than Garret and hire him. If this happens it will only have happened due to the Rooney Rule.

Dammit Amendial, stop making sense. You're raining on my parade!
Anyway, what if any minority candidate they called declined to interview? Lock up the process. Can you see the Cowboys petitioning the league to let them satisfy the rule by interviewing a Jewish candidate? A homosexual? Minorities... What if Garrett were a vegetarian? That's a minority.
I know the rule likely has specific language defining minority based on race, but it still irritates me a lot. Personally, I feel as long as we perpetuate things like this, we'll never just be 'people', we'll continue to be defined by something as meaningless as the color of our skin.

You remember incorrectly. Tomlin was on the Radar as one of the top prospects, and was the leading candidate for the job with Cowher's stamp of approval. The Rooney rule had nothing to do with it.

Yeah, Tomlin was a highly regarded defensive coordinator. He wasn't just a filler interview.
The Cowboys should just grab a homeless guy off the street, buy him lunch, ask him a few questions and say they interviewed a minority. Then hire whoever they want..
