A truly tragic way to end the Indycar season. He was only in the race as a PR move by the league. If he had won, he would have split 5 mil between himself and a lucky fan. I don't blame Randy Bernard for the PR stunt, as no one would have every guessed something like this would occur.
Not many people follow the sport due the the split a while back, but Dan Wheldon was one of the good guys in the league. I have had the honor of meeting him, and he treats everyone like his family. He never let the fame and money get to his ego.
I keep thinking back to a few years ago. He was scheduled to visit an Indianapolis children's hospital for 45 minutes during off day from the 500 festivities. Even though he was only supposed to be there for 45 minutes, he made sure he visited every child who was there, and also talk with their families. He also made the rounds to chat with the staff who were working the units(that was my first encounter with him). He finally left nearly 4 hours after he arrived. That showed me he wasn't there for the PR, but indeed there to make the day for those kids and their families.
He leaves behind his wife and two children, a two year old and a six month old.
RIP Dan. The world needs more men like you.
