I'm thinking that while we're a photography community, a we can learn a lot and be inspired by any of the visual arts. I'd like to try and get a daily thread going where someone posts a piece of art (or rather a link to it to keep the thread kash friendly) they particularly like and people chime in with whatever comments they have. It can be a painting, video, whatever.

Ideally, I was thinking within that thread if someone has an idea for the next days post, they can go ahead and claim it. People who have recently posted one can kind of wait and give people who haven't posted one recently a chance to claim it. Make sense? Anyone like the idea?

Anyway, here is one for today:

Impression, Sunrise
Claude Monet

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impression,_Sunrise

I chose this painting because it's one of the flagships of Impressionism. I'm becoming a fan of the style. A lot of the style seems to be snapshots into daily life represent; one of my favorite kinds of photography. I like this one particularly because the lack of hard lines and details doesn't obscure the subject. It raises interesting questions about how we perceive things.

Well, either we've got a new daily thread or I've gotten a chance to share one of my favorite works with you. A win either way.

Nice thread idea, while it's not photography, it does require us to look at composition and colour.

I'm not a huge fan of Impressionism, my taste is more towards realism (and surrealism) but I like this, there's enough detail to make me want to look deeper and I love the colours in it. Copper and verdigris always appeal to me.

I think I'd really like Surrealism, but I haven't had much of a chance to explore it. I think you'd like Gustave Caillebotte. He's an impressionist, but does much more detailed and realistic work than many people attribute to impressionism...

Being the big ole hillbilly that I am, I never really got in to paintings, except for the more realistic stuff.
