I really think programs like Photomatix have made it easy for people of all skills to create some really cool looking pictures, however i think people are going crazy with it. It seems like so many people are getting so carried away with making HDR images that don't even resemble photos in the end. What do you guys think, love it? Hate it? Pie?

I like the more subtle HDR pictures, good highlights and contrast, but it seems like the majority of the hdr pictures on flickr/the net these days are so overdone that they make me want to barf. Throw in your two cents.

I do agree that some people are going overboard. It is much like when Photoshop was first becoming big and everyone and their brother rocked the lens flare, lol.

Not if you place them correctly:

I love HDR ("tone-mapping" if you want to get anal about terminology). It's what got me into photography. Specifically it was this guy's photographs:

http://www.stuckincustoms.com/

He's got a pretty broad spectrum of HDR ranging from subtle pseudo-HDR to full-blown, CGI-looking HDR. HDR is one of those things that can easily be done wrong, but I think even the stuff that looks more like CGI than a photograph has it's place. I feel like it gives a lot of options for bringing out the 3D feel of an image and trying to invoke some the emotional elements that a scene invokes in person but that are not so easily transmitted by a "pure" photograph...

Edit:

This is actually the exact photograph that inspired me to get into photography.

See i have mixed feelings towards that site, some of his images are really nice looking to me but some of them are just overkill.

I mean this looks cool and everything but it's just too much for my taste.

But on the same site this image looks really nice and captures a much more realistic dynamic range that the eye could probably see but the camera can't capture in one exposure.

I love playing around in photomatix and combining exposures to make more dynamic images but i guess i just feel like a lot of people are trying to create images you would never be able to see. It's like capturing something vs. creating something i guess.
