Hi

I currently have a 40D and 420ex with a few low end lenses and was looking to upgrade my speedlight to something with a little more power.

I mostly just take shots of my kiddo but I'm looking to upgrade my flash. Anyone know if the difference between the 420ex and 430ex is enough to make upgrading worth it or should I just move straight to the 580?

the 580ex is a AWESOME lens when used off camera. I only use flashes off camera, so I dunno about on camera.

if you can afford the 580ex, get that one.

What do you even look at when choosing a flash? Is each one just bigger and brighter than the other with a faster possible rate of fire? Flashes are something I know absolutely nothing about...

well, as a "strobist" (LOL) I look for how it works in manual mode, how it can be fired off camera, and the guide numbers, although I am still learning those, as they differ from manufacturer to manuf...

if you want to learn to use them off camera, go visit http://www.strobist.com and click on Lighting 101
