You can't watch your kids 24 hours a day. And, no matter how well you raise them, sometimes they will do something stupid. Granted, I think at least one parent should have been awake to see him off to school but I know a lot of kids who have parents who leave for work and they wait for the bus alone. I'm not sure it was right to put the kids in protective custody unless there was a history or they found something more when they visited the house.

I can't think of any instance where it would be appropriate for a child to walk to or wait for the bus alone at that age. ESPECIALLY if the "reason" is that Mom is in bed sleeping.
