The way my kids are going through shoes, I figure those stats are off by a factor of at least 10...

I don't think that it's realistic to include 'housing'.

My housing demands don't increase that drastically to include $50k/child housing expense. People also tend to buy up, and spend the same amount on housing. Instead of a $200k semi-detached, 1400 sq for 2 children they might buy a $200k condo.

Ideology is not reality.
To make good policy, one must consider all ideologies and decide which best solves the reality of the situation. Ideology is afterall, JUST AN IDEA.

See, I've thought this myself many times before. I have to live somewhere, and honestly the difference between somewhere I'd live solo and with the kids is NOT that much. I also don't believe that every child NEEDS its own room and double bed, walk-in closet and playroom either.

They are probably figuring each kid needs a room. I know I could have bought a smaller house if I didn't need the extra bedroom for my daughter. I wonder if it also includes things like utilities. Those 8-14 year old girls seem to use A LOT of water when they shower! But also it might include things like extra electrity, furniture, etc. I agree that it does seem a little high but I'm also in a lower cost of living area so everything is cheaper here.
