In the hopefully near future (been saying this for a while & still haven't come to a decision on how to do it) we're going to be painting our dining room. We have a SW style house and this room has no corners really...the ceiling is a continuous curve along the edges of the room into the walls.

A few brainstorm notes thusfar:

I will not use wallpaper to designate a cutoff point

I don't want to use standard trim/moulding (but I may if I find a good combo that I like - I don't want a small moulding if this is the route we go)

I won't be painting the whole room a standard color - it's going to be a southwest type of red & either white or offwhite. I'm not object to a third neutral color such as a tan.

I'm not object to painting straight lines & may just do so... however I'm hoping to find some other crazy or random suggestions that folks have tried... like my sis in law used 1" round rope once on her walls with some roofing nails & I believe hot glue lol

(Edit: ps, I posted this a long time ago and dont remember the responses... I'm hoping that with this new forum I'll get some great ideas! Thanks!)

Hrmm

OOH!

Ok, paint the bottom 4 feet of the wall a nice brick red, and paint the top half white/offwhite/eggshell or whatever color you pick. I would use crown moulding for the wainscoat, but you can use anything, and actually, black horseshoes would look really neat.

if we lived anywhere but the southwest I think I'd consider the horseshoe concept I do like the idea of creating a chair rail type of thing - my mind has been stuck up higher with like a 3' wide border midwall or crown moulding up top. now I have more thoughts! <3

what are the other colors in your house, Synnah? Maybe we could brainstorm an idea to use for the chair rail (trust me, they're a godsend, hehe), and if you want to do a moulding up top, you could colormatch the chair rail with the moulding up top, natural wood is also always an option, especially if you were to do a really dark color for the first 3-4 feet of the wall, and a light color up top, maybe an oak or a pine, depending on your cabinets, etc in your kitchen, and if the dining room is near your kitchen.

My grandma has the same type of ceiling you describe, and what they did with her house is they did a moulding in a darker taupe against a merlot colored wall right where the ceiling turns into the wall (where it starts getting straight), and painted the ceiling the brightest white they could find, allows for a LOT of light displacement from the sconces she has, and makes it actually look like there's a ceiling.

I have tons of ideas, hehe, don't want to overwhelm ya

I would think that stenciling is a possibility.

there is no color in my house yet lol

but once it happens, the rooms will basically have one bright primary or secondary color to go with the spanish/southwestern style theme (real yellow, blue, red... purple will be in our bathroom, green and a terra cotta orange color also possibilities. the base color for all rooms will remain white, not off white at all.) our sitting area (dining nook or whatnot just off the kitchen) is currently covered in paintings from the kids (and other members) of our family. every color you can imagine. basically picture giving a kid a big piece of paper & letting them pain things like naturescapes (blue line sky green line grass type stuff) plus the bigger kids have done their own stuff including snoopy, charlie brown, and a half finish daffy duck & porky pig lol

that's about the extent of the color in our house. The ceiling in our guest room is yellow. Blue is the plan for one or two bedrooms. If/when we have a child the nursery regardless of girl or boy will 99% likely be new york yankee design from top to bottom (so navy/white there)

so anyway, not trying to match much and do have a real red paint color picked out. I'll take pics soon because I also want to paint the brick of the fireplace at the same time lol (note: it will probably take a year plus to get this project off the ground so no rush at alllll lol)
