Does anyone here have experience with tankless water heaters? My husband and I are thinking about replacing our old, inefficient water heater with a tankless one.

My brother in law installed one when he built his new house and says they save a ton of money on the utility bills because they only heat water as you need it and the one he bought can heat up to 6 gallons of water a minute - plenty for our household. It would also save space in our utility room since they just mount on the wall.

They are very common in Europe. They do a decent job, but forget taking long showers.

Some people think that with a tankless water heater, they can save by letting their dishwasher heat the water; however, the water heating system in a dishwasher is NOT efficient: It takes a LOT more energy to heat water from 40 to 180 than it does to heat it from 130 to 180.

Well, I'm usually in and out of the shower in about 15 minutes. Having a baby around the house, the days of long, luxurious showers are past

I was under the impression that these water heaters had come a long way, though. Doesn't a dishwasher draw its hot water from the water heater just like everything else? I wouldn't want the dishwasher to heat all of its own water.

I would imagine that the dishwasher would draw its hot water from the tankless heater unless you set it somehow not to draw from it. No idea how that would all work though.
