We have wood floors that are stained a lovely reddish color...not too dark though. It's obvious they're stained though because in a few places there are scratches, and you can see the paler wood underneath hehe.

My question is how to take care of those scratches so they're no longer noticeable? Can I just take a small can of stain and a little paintbrush and go over those areas? I don't trust the pens and markers that will miraculously make the scratches disappear.

Also, I use a dustmop to get dust, dog hair, dirt, etc off the floor, and then I mop as usual. Generally I use Murphy's oil soap, which cleans the floor nicely, but the nice shininess doesn't last very long. Within an hour or so if I look at the floor and the light is shining just right, I can see what look like large waterspots on the floor...like a sockprint or something. If someone walks over the floor when it's wet I can understand, but this seems to happen regardless. Anyone know of a way to prevent this without having to mop my floor every two hours?

my only experience with wood floors was as a child and my mom would paste wax them by hand and us kids got to put on old socks and play skating all over the house to help polish them up!

She used Old English 800 on scratches it came in a plastic bottle and she just poured a bit on the scratch let it set for a few minutes and then buffed it. We also had a dust mop for the hardwood floors. I think sometimes she would spray the dustmop with furniture polish to keep the floors shiney between waxings.

Furniture polish sounds like it might work. I know though that I'm specifically not supposed to use wax on these floors though. So that's a no-go

Be VERY careful with furniture polish on your floors. Use too much and they will get dangerously slippery!

One of my children decided to do mommy a favor and polish our wood stairs with Pledge. I had to strip them with a mild solution of ammonia and water just to get the polish off before someone killed themselves on those stairs!
