Has anyone done texture themselves on their ceiling or walls? We need orange peel and from the estimates we've gotten, it's WAY to expensive to pay someone else to do. I'm curious if I can do it myself and what I would need to buy

Sorry I haven't done any fancy like that. But I did find some resources online:

Good luck. From what I read, you might have to rent a sprayer from a rental place to lay the texture down.

I never heard of orange peel. I have heard of accoustic, and sand swirling. I'm going to guess from skimming the article that orange peel is much like accoustic.

Now if you want a very small area of accoustic patched in, you can buy the stuff in a can and piece it in. If you want a whole room, you should buy or rent the machine to apply it.

I did this myself and it really wasnt that hard at all. The neighbor man helped me out a bit as I was getting started. I rented a sprayer and it came with directions on how to mix the spackle. You just spray it on let it set for a few minutes until it is a bit dry then go over it lightly with a mud trowel. The hardest part was remembering to keep moving with the sprayer so you got an even coating rather than a thick layer. I worked in half the wall sections and took my time. After it was dried and I painted over it you could not tell that it had not been professionally done. If you have a Jerry's or a home depot ask in there for advise those guys are a wealth of information.

Thank you for the replies! We have a living room and kitchen ceiling to texture and 2 bathroom walls. We had a leak in our living room ceiling and had to get 2 huge sections re dry walled Of course it happened right after we paid a couple thou to get the downstairs textured and painted /sigh

I will look into this for sure and might try and convine the hubby we can do it!

Thanks a TON!

So you spray on accoustic and then knock it off with a mud knife? If this is the case I have heard it called "knock-down" before. Glad to know the correct term for it.

I think there are actually 2 different ways "knock down" you just knock of the high spots so to speak, and "orange peel" you apply more pressure flattening out the mud more.
