My daughter's first grade class used their new knowledge of fractions to make mini apple pies today. I have to work late and then go to a meeting tonight so she brought in her pie for me. (She doesn't like apple pie.)

I used my knowledge of fractions to eat 1/2 of the pie now. I will eat the other 1/2 later.

I think they also used it as a a science lesson.

Cooking is a great way to teach kids a variety of lessons.

(Ok...it's later!)

I remember when I was a Senior in HS, I was in this program called "Older Younger". We were paired up with a kindergarten student, and we were their "Older". We made these cool little apple pies with those canned biscuits and brown sugar. I wish I could find the recipe, because they were absolutely delicious, and so easy to make. I know my kids would have a field day making them. They both like to help Mommy cook, but my son LOVES it. He says when he grows up he is going to "be a chef and have his own tv show on Food Network!" Hehe, that's my boy!

I agree, cooking is a great way to teach kids various subjects. Its also a great way to keep communication open between them and yourself. You wouldn't believe the conversations we have had making stuff together in the kitchen. Everyone is relaxed and things just flow. I usually don't get any fights during that period either every one is well behaved.

My Youngest girl goes to a special needs preschool- they made Apple Pizzas this week in honor of thier field trip to the apple orchard:

One tube refrigeratied biscuits (10per tube)

1/2 cup grated Cheese (they used mozzarella)

2 sliced apples

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

2 tablespoons Flour

tiny dabs of margerine or butter

1. Mix brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon in a small bowl

2. Flatter Biscuits and place on lightly greased cookie sheet

3. Sprinkle some grated cheese on top

4. Place several Apple slices on top.

5. Sprinkle with the sugar mixture from #1.

6. Top with a tiny dab or butter or margerine

7. Bake at 350 for 12-14 minutes

She hasnt quit talking about this since they made them lol. She's now all about trying to measure, and has taken quite the interest in my kitchen. I'm thrilled!
