We're going to my sister's for Christmas morning this year, and her 1 year old is incredibly allergic to milk (no one can have any without washing their hands and brushing their teeth before touching her). We usually make Oyster Stew for breakfast on Christmas, so I'm looking for some ideas on how to make an oyster stew without milk. I'm thinking Soy Milk might be too sweet for it.

We may have to scrap the whole idea, but thought I'd ask and see if any of you had any clever ideas.

Just to add, she's allergic to eggs as well so anything using eggs also wouldn't work.

I hate food allergies!!

I haven't even tasted soy milk before, so I can't comment. But I have used canned coconut milk combined with chicken broth in curries. I don't know how it would work in oyster stew, but it was yummy in the curry.

Substitute tomato sauce for the dairy, or chicken stock thickened with roux.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I like the roux idea... I've made gumbo before and I could see how many changing up the style slightly might work for oyster stew. I'm going to toy with some ideas tomorrow and see what I can come up with. I'll let ya know how it turns out.

Have a great Christmas!
