Can't stand them. If I am considering a book and it has a long prologue I tend to put it down. There are two basic types of prologue and I really don't know which I loathe more; the epic world building prologue is almost unreadable in its boringness but I loathe ANY chapter from the POV of an irrelevant character and so many authors introduce the enemy, conflict, etc. through a prologue using the eyes of some random nobody.
It drives me to distraction prologues are so boring.
On the flip side I love epilogues and I don't think I've ever read one that was of a satisfying length for me.

Same. Prologues, introductions, really long table of contents. They all drive me nuts.

what i hate more are first chapters that are really prologues in disguise. you spend the entire chapter trying to get a grasp on whats going on and whose who and then the second chapter is years later, different characters, whatever and your like wtf?

Especially since authors think introductory chapters are license to be vague.

I agree for the most part. I liked the Eye of the World's prologue, which showed Lews Therin. There are a few others, but for the most part prologues suck. I even read a book where the entire thing was a prologue to the actual story. Pissed me off. It was called Dark Glory War.
