can't say i've seen the original from new zealand (outrageous fortune) but i did see honest from the uk and it was quite good. think i'll download the first nz season.

i love how they don't think we can handle accents or cultures that aren't our own over here. they're remaking no heroics (awesome show), outnumbered (BRILLIANT sitcom. seriously good.) and the vicar of dibbey (jfc they got kirstie alley to play dawn french's part! WHY GOD! WHY!!!!!). thank god the it crowd remake was killed. they're still making it in the uk and it's still awesome.

I don't know that it's being afraid of accents as much as it is creatively bankrupt for new ideas. Because, no matter how good the show is, or how understandable the accents are, a major network is not simply going to broadcast reruns of another country's shows. That's just doesn't strike me as a particularly good business model.

That's pretty much how WGN, TNT, and TBS were built. Granted those are cable networks which run on a slightly different model than broadcast networks, but I think that's changing now. The differentiation between broadcast and cable networks is diminished every day.

Running shows that everyone knows are reruns, and in syndication, is completely different than trying to pass off old foreign product as new for an American audience. People just won't accept that. Nor should they, honestly. Can always watch BBC America or get the dvds. I don't disagree with the OP's point that it's kinda lame we're just remaking so many British shows, but I don't think the answer is just importing them to fill in our prime time schedule. And I don't think it has much to do with accents.

Doesn't matter...the show stunk like old gym socks.
