Firefox 5 sneaks out. Goes official this week |
I've heard June 21st (tomorrow) and June 24th (Friday) as release dates for Firefox 5.0. But if you don't want to wait, you can download it now from Firefox's FTP server.
Here is a link to the English-US Windows version. But you can go up a level or two and grab other versions/languages also.

No major changes in this version though. But you can see the change log from the beta versions in the story below.

PS. I installed it a few minutes ago and my computer didn't explode, so I think it's safe so far. |

On a serious note, seem small overall, i wonder how far the quick numbered release will go.

i dont like these fast version upgrades for the simple reason that the addons break. most of them are coded to work up to only a certain version number, and lots of em i use aren't updated regularly which means i have to download the xpi, extract, manually edit the file, repack and then install.

While I'm sure there are still new browser features that can be brought to the table (multi-threaded tabs comes to mind), I wish they'd spend more focus on security and performance. The 500k+ memory bloated Firefox is getting sad. I almost want to swap to Chrome...

I switched to Chrome a few months ago. Firefox had started to feel bloated and slow to me. And I've never been a big add-on guy, so I had little investment.
I just like how Chrome is faster for me, and the address bar serves jointly for navigation and searches. I also dig the home screen layout.
But I'm gonna give 5 a shot for a few weeks.

I enjoy chrome quite a bit. Sadly the company I work for has decided to roll out a proxy browser solution for internet explorer only so we are all going to have to use that soon. It makes me a bit angry.
