Pretty weird, AMD is selling Radeon branded DDR3 memory modules. Sadly no cool looking heatspreader (at least on the model shown) and the specs are a bit low end too.

Perhaps AMD had a surplus of memory chips?

Memory performance (except GPU memory of course) is overrated anyway. The gain between DDR2 and DDR3 in overall system performance is marginal, if there's one.
For a graphic card, memory performance will give huge overall performance increases, but not for computer RAM. Not anymore. Not past DDR2.
