Startup Millenniata partnered with Hitachi LG to create a new optical disc that is suppose to last forever. It's call M-Disc and will intially come in a DVD compatiable format, holding 4.7GB of storage, and can be read with existing DVD players. M-Disc and M-Disc recording drives are coming in October.

They don't mention how much the recorder will cost, but each disc will cost $3. A regular DVD-R costs about 20 cents. So forever is expensive.

I used to backup to DVDs. However I started noticing after a few years they started becoming difficult to read. Now I just keep buying hard drives in pairs and mirroring them.
