There is already a USB battery charging spec that increases the the power of some USB ports for faster charging. But it's still not that much and I think it just operates in one direction.
USB guys want to really beef it up. The new version will be able to run 100 watts over a USB 2.0 or 3.0 connection, using standard cables even. And it will work both ways. So not only can it charge batteries much faster, the computer can power much larger devices, such as a monitor or printer with just the USB cable.

Specification is expected to be finalized sometime in 2012, so I guess that means probably no products with it until 2013. But it will be compatible with existing USB cables.
At least it gives you time to upgrade that power supply. |

This makes me feel better about buying a 750 watt power supply last year to power a system that probably doesn't use 550.

This is all well and good for desktops 600+ watt power supplies, but what about low power desktops and laptop which are far more prevalent these days ?
I could see this being a problem in enterprise environments with people trying to lookup say a 50 watt charging device when they only have a 250 watt power supply, or a laptop with only a 90 watt power supply?

It's an optional feature, not all USB ports will support this, so the hardware manufacture will have the discretion of deciding if the computer they are building should have a USB charging v1.2 port in it or not.
