I was just in my local Bestbuy looking at their laptop lapdesks and overheard the sales guy tell a customer that the i3 is "kinda like a quad core" and the i5 is "kinda like a 6 core" and the "top of the line is the i7, kinda like an 8 core"
I kinda did a double take and said to myself, "what?"
I almost wanted to pull the sales guy aside and correct him but just walked on by.

He might have been referring to Hyper Threading on some of these processors. Some have it, some don't. So I guess you could say a dual core i3 with Hyper Thread is "kinda like" a quad core.  |

My takes on that,
I3 being like a 4 cores, kinda true with Hyper-Threading.
I5 being like a 6 cores... no idea what he's talking about... maybe with Turbo Boost?
I7 being like a 8 cores, with Hyper-Threading it could be.
But what he said, might lead some costumer to wrong conclusions. Hyper-Threading doesn't add cores physically, more like theoretical cores IMO. He should have explained it better. I understand your point of view thought

The majority of people that work in Best Buy are college kids. The majority of those people do not care about the job. They are given crap training and thrown onto a sales floor. They are constantly pressured to sell sell sell and add on as much crap as they can.
Do your own homework or expect to get burned.

Could also be some marketing material Intel asked Best Buy employees to say. AMD is coming out with 6 and 8 core desktop CPUs very soon. People are saying the 6 core AMD processors should be competitive against the Intel i5 and the 8 cores go head to head wit the i7.

i like to go into best buy and force one of the retards to explain computers to me while i correct everything they say. i mean if i'm forced to go to best buy with a family member i like to get some entertainment while there.

I just got a link for a new AMD 16 core chip for just over $1050..
That being said, if am I not mistaken I3 and I5 do not have Hyperthreading, only I7 does... (all of my machines are I7... lol)

Pretty much all dual core i3 and i5 processors have Hyper Threading standard. The quad core i5's usually don't have Hyper Threading though.
