Is there anyone here that really knows how these settings work? It seemed much simpler in Windows XP. I have a APC UPS, pretty new that is showing a full charge but it hibernated my PC (I use the USB cable) last night I can't figure out why. I see these percentages in the Control Panel but most of the behaviors don't have it doing much.

The only option that is set to do something is Critical Battery Action, under Battery, has it hibernate if it's on battery. I'm not sure why that's the default. I want to shut down cleanly if it's on battery, BUT only if the battery is low, not full still. Any ideas?

I figured it out. Windows 7 sets it to 98%, which is dumb because a battery can fluctuate. It doesn't even let you change it, it just reverts back to 98%. I had to use the command line as outlined on this site to fix it.

Thank you for posting this, btw. It actually has been irritating the crap out of me that I can't change any power management settings on my HP laptop. But now I know to just remove the battery while on AC power before making changes and they stick. Thanks!

I used the command line method listed below that one. It seemed a little extreme to have to drain the battery to do that, but if it worked for you, awesome.

I didn't drain the battery, I just removed the battery with the cable plugged in and changed the settings as per the top part and it worked like a champ. Thanks again.

Hmmm....I just checked my settings for the heck of it and they reverted back to 98%. I'd keep an eye on your settings. Very annoying.

Luckily, I made a .bat file I can run.
