I got an ad from NCIX this for this today and it actually looks interesting. I had forgotten about these hybrid drives though.

Something like this would make a pretty good Steam Drive for gaming I think. Lots of space and very fast response times. Not quite as fast as a regular SSD, but faster than a Raptor probably.

Has anybody tried any of these types of drives before? Any reviews out there? I am curious how reliable they are and how fast they are when compared to a Raptor 600MB.

Anandtech is working on a review for the this new Momentus XT. Their review of the first Momentus XT showed that it trailed the Velociraptor 600GB hard drives.

Gaming often has a lot of sequential reading which the V-Raptor will do better.

I wish steam would have an option to "archive" your unplayed games to another drive in an easier fashion than the backup function built into the steam client. It is incredibly clunky, and seems slower than it should be. I just want to set a game as active or inactive in steam, and have it store the data accordingly.

I would be happy if steam allowed you to use multiple drives.....

I am aware of those, but it is not native to the app.

Sounds to me like a great way to have more ways to fail.

With the popularity of SSD's and other really fast drives this should definitely be a requirement. There are a few games that you really would get a benefit from an SSD, but as it stands you either have to install every game on the ssd or none of them. Or learn to use the mklink command which most people don't even know exists.

I am wondering if this is the last we are going to see of the raptors. Drives like this are close to the performance of a raptor and generate less heat and use less power which makes them ideal for the laptop form factor they are designed under. I don't think anyone sane would pay the price for a raptor drive vs the price for an SSD even if they could bring the platter size up to increase storage size.

PS. If this is for a desktop, I would not really consider either Momentus XT or V-Raptor (which won't fit in most laptops anyway). A good 7200RPM desktop drive is still going to provide better performance than the Momentus XT and a better value than the V-Raptor.

Momentus XT looks excellent for laptops that need performance and lot of space. But I wouldn't use it in a desktop.
