http://www.dailytech.com/Seagate+Joins+Western+Digital+in+HDD+Warranty+Massacre+Doubles+Down+with+1Year+Warranties/article23545.htm
Seagate and Western Digital are both slashing their warranty periods from 5 years down to as little as 1 year from some models, with none being longer than 3 years now.
There was the Thailand flood and maybe WD needed to do this because they were severely impacted. Seagate on the other hand wasn't impacted at all.
There is also less competition. Seagate and Western Digital have pretty much bought up all the smaller hard drive manufactures. Seagate snagged Maxtor a few years back. And just months ago Western Digital acquired Hitachi. We pretty much have a hard drive duopoly now.
