My brother's comp I just built is idling at 40C (I'm not overclocking). While that's not bad, I know it should be a lot lower. I am using a COOLER MASTER HAF 922 RC-922M-KKN1-GP Black Steel + Plastic and Mesh Bezel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case and a Thermaltake CLP0564 Frio Dual 120mm Universal CPU Cooler - LGA1366, LGA1156, LGA775, AM3, AM2+, AM2 for the processor heatsink. I use the same processor heatsink in my computer and my idle temps are around ~25C. As soon as I boot up my brother's comp, I go into the BIOs and the CPU temp is 40C. Mobo temp is 18C. I put Artic Silver 5 using a pea sized amount and evenly distributed. I'm absolutely baffled on what to do. The temps should be around ~25-30C idle. Anyone have any ideas?

You really should not concern yourself with idle temps. It's the load temps you should pay attention to.

Intel CPUs sometimes don't give accurate idle temp reading. And other things, such as the motherboard censor location, fan speeds, case temperatures, etc can influence the reading as well.

Use Prime95 to load all the cores and watch the load temps. If it gets above 80C (and preferably stay under 75C under normal conditions) then there might be an issue.

AS5 has a minimum 80 hour burn in time. That being said, it just sounds like you have block placement loose. Either that or you forgot to remove the layer of plastic covering the bottom of the frio That would put your idle temp around 40. Not that I would know anything about that (whistles innocently...)

Thanks all for the replies. I updated the BIOS and my temps dropped significantly. It went from 40C in the BIOS to 25C in the bios upon bootup. I haven't done the prime95 test yet but I will. I'm pretty sure it's fine now. Thanks all!
