Nook Tablet's update disabled the ability to side load applications. Sounds like even if you are rooted, if you get the update, your side loading day are ended unless you revert back to firmware 1.40 or use a custom ROM.

Kinda weird both Amazon and B&N come out with anti-fun updates on the same day right before Christmas. Grinches!
PS. I imagine someone will figure out how to work around both soon though.
