Are there any IT services for home users? I Google but came up empty. I was thinking of starting a local service like this. Any thoughts on how this would do?

You mean like a managed services platform or something? Remote monitoring, single PC backup? Doesn't seem like the start up cost would justify the idea.

Like geeksquad. Basically do remote help with installing new equipment, and troubleshoot issues for people. Setup backups for them. Virus removal too. It would be something i would like to offer as a small monthly fee for unlimited remote support, and billable on things like virus removal.

No idea what kind of arrangements you have in America, but it's a pretty common setup in the UK through local repair shops. My own local one operates a Silver/Gold/Platinum "Care Plan Home" as illustrated here:-

Is that the kind of thing you had in mind?

Most of the local repair shops in the US are a thing of the past.

You can't compete with Dell or HP for the basic PC.

You can usually do better than Dell for a gaming PC and I am not even sure HP has a "gaming" line.

I have yet to see a local computer place actually do virus / malware removal. Most of them want to back up your pictures and documents and then format and re-install your OS.

In my town of 10,000 I am the only person who actually will attempt to remove herpes from computers.

I think there's a market for it, but man I wouldn't want to be responsible for a lot of peoples computers.

Because these days it's actually faster to backup then format/restore than to attack the virus/malware head on.

I love the challenge, but if I'm being paid, and I need to ensure someone's data so they don't hold me liable, yeah I'm gonna wipe it.
